I loooove make-up, although I don’t plaster my face with it, I still feel that every girl should wear it once in a while. It gives you a chance to make yourself look extra-gorgeous (because every girl has natural beauty) but with make-up you’re able to play around and experiment with different colours. You’re able to be your own artist and have fun with your very own canvas. With make up there is no limitation, you can do whatever you want because it is your face and who is anyone to judge what you do to it. I find it interesting that there are such things such as permanent eyelash curling and permanent make up. There are people who can’t leave their house without putting on makeup whether it be they are ashamed of what they look like without it or they just feel prettier with it on. However it can be pretty time consuming and I think that permanent make up is something that many women will be able to appreciate. I also think that natural things such as “fish pedicure” is fascinating because who would have thought that FISH can make your feet look flawless – that’s amazing. I’m thinking of transforming my bathtub into a fishtank so I can have pedicures everyyy night (jokes) my mom would kill me.

Writer Investigation – Brea Burton

Originally from Edmonton, Brea Burton graduated from the University of Alberta where she received her B.A in Comparative Literature. After she moved to Calgary and worked in the corporate communication industry. In 2006, she decided to continue her academic career and completed her M.A in Contemporary Canadian Literature at the University of Calgary. She has participated in numerous readings and a variety of local events. Also, Burton has produced a few chapbooks through her imprint and has most recently been published in magazines. She also performs at Conferences.

When I was reading the book “Booty” in class, I realized that there were two separate books in one. One half of the book was for Jill Hartman and the other half of the book had poems written by Brea Burton. At first, I read Hartmans work and though some were interesting, I wasn’t quite intrigued by her work. However when I turned the book around and began reading Burtons pieces, I couldn’t refrain myself from continuing from page to page. Her work was sooooo different, but I couldn’t help but smile or laugh, it was just work that made you gasp and think, oh my…. is she really saying this? Where are her thoughts coming from? Who would have thought these objects could be related to that topic? All these thoughts may have crossed my mind yet I could not stop reading.

Here’s a piece that I really liked by her and even decided to snap a picture of it on my phone lol :

tattoo tremble treble cleft palate hare lip bruise
against her mouth piece sex music space a
strange animal between her legs foreign place
pretty tiger furry bush beaver twat hairy camel
toes bearded clam. did you expect her to talk
about love? how about love? love music love
juices love making music between her legs.
music. box.

As you can see, it’s quite different and the way she changes from words to semi-complete sentences, or even questions kinda makes you go ….huh. (in an interested kind of tone) I wonder how she decides to structure her poems and when does she feel it’s the right time to put a comma or a question mark or even a period. Because to me, it works but I could never be able to do what she does. She’s amazing.

Sound Investigation – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHk_mnez4S4&feature=related

I thought to myself epitaph? Epitaph? I found that I repeated it a million and one times until I came to the conclusion that it’d probably be best to open a new tab and just find out what it meant.

Epitaph = A commemorative inscription on a tombstone or monument / A final judgment on a person or thing

Once I knew what the word meant, it still didn’t make any sense to me as to why the artist would name the piece “Epitaph for Moonlight”. However, once I began watching the video I realized that Murray Schafer was trying to show that our outer space is so historical in our lives yet we should not completely demise it from our lives. By choosing a very historic and important event (man landing on moon) it influenced him to compose this video and to use the specific words he used, whether they be complete non-sense or words he just decided to come up with. The sound pictures Schafer created can generate many different writing pieces about ones passion because he used the images to express it.

I really enjoyed the video. I found it incredible how such small notes and ridiculous words can change a sound and create something totally different. I never thought I would feel the countless amount of emotions that I felt while watching the video. The sounds created an image in my head, apart from the images that were being displayed on the screen. The sounds were fantastic, it was as if there were a million different sounds put together to create a very beautiful and peaceful unison sound.

Sound Investigations – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwgQ1aWKYtc

I wasn’t sure what I was expecting when I clicked on the link but what I happened to see in the video was actually pretty fascinating. The Korean Consonants is a mixture of both hard and soft sounds.

“Bah, Pah, Tah, Dah, Kah, Cha, Jah, Tah, Kah, Gah, Kah “

As you can see, many of the words he said either starts with a soft letter or a hard letter. I found it really interesting that the man in the video decided to put a piece of paper in front of his mouth so that it accentuates the amount of pressure used when saying the particular word. I realized that when he said a word that started with a soft letter such as “Jah” or “Gah” the paper didn’t move at all, however when he said a word with a hard letter such as “Kah” or “Pah” the piece of paper moved much more. When I watched the video for about the 5th time I found something else quite interesting. When the man was speaking in the beginning of the video, I realized that he was actually putting more enthusiasm or accentuates more on his consonants than most people might. It’s quite amazing to see that peoples mother tongue actually follows you into your daily lives and is passed onto how you speak your second language, in his case English.

COOOOOOOL!

Known for her vocal abilities, Christine Duncan is recognized as one of the most versatile vocal instrument in Canada. The Element Choir she leads from Toronto produces work with such a fascinating sound where they use both structured and non-structured elements. they are mostly based on a system of conduction cues. Most of her creations come from her involvement in jazz, gospel, improvised music, sound poetry and (one of my favourites) R&B. Due to her variety of styles, a listener may experience rhythmic patterns, sound poetry, composition ideas, voice techniques and timbral sound qualities while listening to her pieces.

When she was younger, she began learning about sound. When she was five she began performing with her family in gospel shows and at age fifteen she recorded her first album. her early stages of life led her to become a stronger artist. By using her voice as an instrument to create many different sounds, it is apparent that she is a veryyyy talented artist. Though she is a distinctive artist, she shares similarities with every other artist and that is the love of art and sound. The way she uses her voice as an instrument is what separates her from every other artist because she is able to create sounds that are poetic, rhythmic, and extremely creative.

I would like to listen to her work and find out more about her specifically as an artist. But to be quite honest, I’m not sure if I would actually ENJOY her stuff, but hey … we’ll see

Loud. Very loud. High Pitch. Screeeeeeeeeeetches.
I don’t know what to think of this other than WOW. I loved it.
I find their style interesting and unique and it seems as though it would be very difficult to do. I listened to it twice, first as a whole and the second time I attempted to listen to each girl individually. They all had very different roles to play in the piece which were interesting, however it sounded better all together. During many parts of the piece, I felt as though I was in a rainforest. The sounds were very soothing yet the loud pitches were very harsh, it made me believe that there were exotic animals surrounding me everywhere. Who would have thought that a bunch of these annoying sounds could be put together and create such a beautiful piece of artwork.

This reminded me of the days in grade 6 that me and my best friend would constantly find interest in making loud, high pitched noises just like these 3 women were doing. We would constantly annoy both our families and friends when we were together as we’d compete at trying to make the most annoying sound. It was actually really fun and very time consuming. Maybe if we knew that we were so talented (haha) we might have been able to create something like these women did. You know what, I might just do it…….

John Cage seems like a very intellectual human being and for some reason, I find him very fascinating. I love his simplicity. I personally feel that we tend to create complications when we think of sound, when we really should be able to just think of them as sounds and nothing more. He is so laid back and at ease with sound, that it makes it relaxing to listen to his work. In the beginning I thought to myself, why would anyone want to waste their time examining sound? I used to think it was straight forward and to the point, it’s just noise. However, I now realize that “sound is action, something you can’t complain about” – Yeah DUH, John Cage taught me that…….

If everyone was to sit around and examine this thing we call sound like he does, maybe then we would be able to appreciate and understand it for what it really is.

“It is a low-cost eye-tracking apparatus & custom software that allows graffiti writers and artists with paralysis resulting from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis to draw using only their eyes.”

Creativity starts from the mind, the soul. Its our individual and subjective self-expression. Its seeing what nobody else can see. Its creating something from absolutely nothing. Its the very form of imaginary expression that keeps people from going insane. The creators of this amazing initiative had the drive to keep that creativity going. Its allows for talents to shine without any limitations. Plenty has been taken away from these artists but despite that, their talent will always be with them. With this remarkable gadget they’re able to share it with the world and inspire others.

The website also provides a relatively easy and inexpensive way of making the Eye Writer yourself.
